KidsPeace and Orchard Behavioral Health provide free and unscheduled mental health screening for children and adults at three locations. Walk-in assessments are a great resource when you believe an individual may need immediate mental health care or you are uncertain what level of care is appropriate. The goal is to determine an appropriate level of care and help individuals and families navigate the mental health system, while avoiding unnecessary time spent in the Emergency Room.
During the walk-in assessment, the individual and/or the family meets with a therapist who completes a safety screening, risk assessment, and a level of care assessment. The therapist will address any issues within the past 24-hours, create a safety plan with the individual, and link them to appropriate resources. Following the walk-in, a client care representative from KidsPeace will contact you to discuss your current status and any barriers to care.
Common recommendations are outpatient, acute partial hospitalization, or inpatient hospitalization based on the individual’s presenting needs. Outpatient (traditional or tele-health) is recommended for individuals who are experiencing mental and behavioral health symptoms that impact their life, but are generally able to engage in daily activities. Acute partial, is a short-term day program, recommended for individuals experiencing a stark increase in mental and behavioral symptoms and an alternative to inpatient care. Inpatient is only recommended for individuals who require 24-hour care due to a current risk of serious harm or death to self or others.
Walk-in assessments do not include assistance with medication refills, consults on current medications, and/or psychiatric evaluations. A walk-in is not appropriate if the individual cannot be safely transported or if the individual has reported an overdose within the last 24-hours (families should contact 911). Walk-ins are not appropriate for individuals seeking an excused absence from work/school for an extended period of time.
