Substance Use and Addictions Treatment | Episode #44

By October 18, 2021No Comments

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s easy to forget other issues continue to affect our society.  One of those issues: substance abuse and addiction, and on a new episode of the Conversations with KidsPeace podcast we discuss how KidsPeace’s treatment programs are serving clients in need in the COVID age.

Simple prevention strategies for parents and caregivers to keep their kids safe and healthy.

Talk early and often

Discuss the risks of using alcohol, prescription medications, and other substances.

Set clear expectations

Be clear that you expect them not to use drugs or alcohol.

Be a parent, not a friend

Your kids need a parent to guide and support them safely into adulthood, not another friend.

Stay engaged

Stay involved in your kids' lives and build relationships with other parents in your community.

Intervene early

If you think your child may be struggling with substance use, don't wait to get help.

Support healthy activities

Kids do better when they are kept busy and feel part of a healthy community.

Set clear consequences

Rather than saying they will be in trouble, set specific consequences.

Do not provide alcohol or drugs to your teen

Adolescents substance use is dangerous no matter where it happens.

Make time for your child

If your relationship with your child is strong they will be more likely to come to you for advice and support.

Prioritize sleep

getting enough sleep is critical for good mental and physicalhealth.
